The first tooth will usually erupt between the ages of five and nine months. Teething can be a most disturbing time for new parents, but this is a normal process in the child's development. Although many systemic conditions, including restlessness, increased salivation and drooling, a raised temperature, changes in bowel habits and stool consistency, and rash have been attributed to teething, studies do not support these findings. Parents should not blame teething for changes in infant's health, and consultation with a pediatrician or child's dentist should be sought to rule out organic disease if the parents are concerned. |
